Too Cold? Really?

Sometime last week, I finally had a chance (for 30 minutes while it wasn't raining) to bust out the girls' sprinkler. Since Elise and Avery are obsessed with fountains and other water-spraying activities, I knew they would be thrilled!

Or not. They wanted nothing to do with it. "Too cold," says Elise. After several minutes of trying to convince them to join me (because I love it!), they instead decided to play with the hose instead. You know, the hose that was delivering the cold water, but now in a much more concentrated form. Apparently that wasn't too cold.

Cute pictures though, and they had a blast washing their hands. (Please, Lord, let their OCPD tendencies stop where mine and Kyle's do, and not creep into the germophobe territory. What we have is bad enough! ;))

Bubbles

What is it about bubbles that puts a smile on everyone's face and a twirl in a little girl's step?

Thank you Auntie Leah, for the bubble machine. Elise and Avery adore it!

Pop-up Storms, Earrings and Big Girl Chairs

Just a few quick pictures from the last week or so! First, the storm that decided to show up as we were driving Aunt Cassi to a local leadership camp. At 10am, the forecast said sunny with a 10% chance of scattered showers. Beautiful summer day, right? At 10:30am, this is what happened instead.

Next, we see Elise wearing her (clip on) earrings from one of her (boy)friends. She wears them EVERY day, and I think we're going to get "real ones from the store" soon! She is just adorable wearing them, prancing around (and shaking her head so she can feel them), oh-so-proud!

And finally, the girls sitting in big girl chairs while eating lunch with Pappy at a local chinese restaurant. Not surprisingly, they didn't have highchairs. The girls also ate their sweet & sour chicken (and rice) out of a styrofoam cup, but only because the dishes they have are china. No pun intended (or... is that a pun? Does "china" have anything to do with "China"? I feel a wikipedia search coming on...). Anyway, they thought they were something special.

Oh wait - and just for fun, a bonus. Can you see Dumbo flying over Cassi's game? She pointed him out, and I think he's just adorable!

It was a dark and stormy night...

Last night, as has been the case many nights this Spring/Summer, we had a violent thunderstorm. I lost count of the number of nights filled with torrential downpours and constant thunder, but at least 5 of them have had 30-60 minutes of 60mph winds and those lightning-thunder combos that light up the sky for several seconds and then shake your house. I don't know about other people's kids, but my two-year-olds are not fans. Especially Avery.

Because there are two of them and one of me, sometimes comforting them at the same time across a large room is difficult. Thankfully, Elise gets stirred a little bit and cries out some, but mostly sleeps. She really is her daddy's girl. Poor Avery, though, sometimes turns white(r than she already is) as a ghost and can't recover unless in her mama's arms. This is tiring, but if you're a mother you know it's not so bad for a while.

One night a while ago, when she was beyond hysterical, she ended up in my bed. This NEVER happens, because my girls are terrible at sleeping in our bed. That night though, since she was there due to fear and not boredom (or manipulation), she fell right to sleep. When the scariest part of the storms ended, I moved her back in her bed and she was fine.

Last night, she woke once again terror-striken. As soon as I got to her half of the room she was in my arms, her arms firmly around my neck, half asleep but still crying out, "Mama white bed?" So off we went, since it went so well the first time and allowed for a bit more sleep for both of us.

Not so this time around. Ultimately, Elise ended up in the bed too, because she had a bit harder time (and because her intermittent crying kept Avery awake and concerned). She fell right to sleep but Miss Avery fought mama and ended up just staying awake, for the most part, for that hour and a half or so.

But, despite being lengthy already, that isn't what this blog entry is about. No, it is about the first few minutes we were all three in the bed together, when Avery was still half-asleep and not fighting me.

As I lay there watching them sleep, in those few brief moments, I had such a special time. (This was before the long, tiring rest of the night). As Elise was sleeping, sometimes Avery would put her arm near her, or they would share the one blankie that had made it into the bed. Each time there was some sort of interaction, Elise - asleep, remember - would get the sweetest, softest little smile. Avery, in those few moments before she was instead focused on waking her up and being ornery (you know, while she was still sleeping), wanted to cuddle next to Sissy. And I couldn't help but be whisked back to 2 years ago, when those sweet newborns wanted nothing more than to cuddle up next to one another.

For a few moments, they even looked like those tiny babies I once had. Stretching, wiggling near one another (and yet staying close to the warmth and comfort of mama). We never co-slept (so not a discussion for this post! ;)) but you know I still watched them sleep like this so many times. I sort of missed it.

And yet, even then, I wasn't sad. I was thankful for that little glimpse into the past. Dare I say it, thankful for all the time we have had just the three of us? No, not really. Not at all, actually. Being the wife of a resident who is gone 27 out of 30 days, 80+ hours a week (not helped by the long commute), all hours of the day and night, has - because there is no way to put it - sucked. Perhaps at times it has been worse than being the resident, because at least then the job ends at work. For a few hours anyway. No, as the resident's wife, the sleepless nights and pretending to be a single parent for months at a time don't go away even when the resident is home.

And yet, the last two years have been so special. I won't dare go so far as to suggest they would have been less special without residency - that is just lunacy. Our lives as a family of four who actually get to spend some time together on a regular basis begins on Thursday, and we DESPERATELY need it. I desperately need it. But in spite of this unconventional set up we've had for the first 2 years of the girls' lives - beginning at about day 4 of life, when we came home from the hospital and Kyle went back to the grind - we've created some spectacular memories that I hope won't fade. Or fade anymore than they have. I hate that, on a regular basis, I don't remember this stuff... but I'm thankful for the occasional, crystal-clear reminder.

And I'm still really thankful it all changes in just a few short days.

One Coin

There is a horse at Meijer that you can ride for a penny. It used to be a penny, then it was free, and now it's a penny again. You can't tell me they actually need to charge that single cent per ride, right? Anyway, I don't complain because it's a great deal.

It would be nice, though, if it were free again for the times this mama only has one coin.

Alas, Elise knew just what to do even though it was technically Avery's turn to ride:

Adalie is two, too!

For the third Saturday in a row (and another coming up, though with a week in between), we got to celebrate a 2nd birthday with one of the girls' friends. Elise and Avery will grow up alongside so many friends that they will have known since such a young age - how blessed they are!

Anyway, this time it was Adalie's turn. Well, technically, Adalie had the first turn, but who is keeping track? Her Dora the Explorer party was most recent, and it was great fun!

We started off coloring, playing with balloons, and donning adorable Backpacks (made especially for each child). After eating lunch and fueling up for our adventure, it was time to bust out our maps (from Backpack, of course!).

First we made a trip through Star Forest (which Avery adored, and which we went back through a few more times before leaving).

Then, it was time to crawl through a tunnel...

and finally we found some yummy cupcakes! They were delicious, and Elise - thanks to Miss Adalie's sweet spirit and generosity - was offered the very first bite of the whole party. Are you at all surprised that she took Adalie up on the offer? Sadly none of us got it on film, but I hear it was pretty sweet! :)

Thank you for inviting us to your very fun party!

More KI visits

We go to Kings Island sometimes.

I'm bad at blogging these days, but highlights have included finding a place at Boomerang Bay where the girls and I can go by ourselves (ie without needing man-to-man defense), showing Grandma Shelly our favorite rides, eating some more blue ice cream, and seeing a "Snoopy Show" that did not, in fact, feature Snoopy. Ok, the last wasn't exactly a highlight, except that I guess I'm glad that Avery got over it quickly enough. We've made a note to make sure and hit the ice show that actually DOES star her newly-found pooch friend...

Enjoy some photos!

A few Gifts

The girls got several wonderful gifts from people who love them, and we are all so grateful to the people who celebrated with us. Here is a bit of video and some pictures from just a few of their new things. If you haven't seen them yet, remember there are more photos in Picasa, in the "Birthday Festivities" album!

Party time!

You read a bit about the dilemma(s) surrounding this year's party plans. I am happy to say that Minnie & Daisy's tea party went well enough at our house. It was crowded and seemed awfully chaotic to me, but everyone seemed to have a good time - especially Elise and Avery, which is what matters most, right?

As friends started arriving, everyone colored pictures of Minnie, Daisy and friends while waiting for the rest of the guests.

When everyone had come, it was time for "games"! I use this term loosely. The majority of the guests were 2 or younger, so activities were more of the structured free-play variety than actual games, which led to fun for toddlers (and entertainment for adults!) instead of tears. First, we found out that someone had pulled the silly switch at the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, and Minnie's & Daisy's bows had been scattered everywhere! It was up to the kiddos to "hunt" for them.

After the bows were safely returned (or stashed in the kids goody bags, as it turned out), it was time for a ball toss game.

Finally, my favorite of the "games". It wasn't a fancy tea party, but we still had a little fun dressing up!

Playing hard works up the appetite, you know, so after putting away the dress-up accessories, it was time for the "tea party picnic". We had lots of fun finger foods, and - of course - birthday cupcakes!

The girls loved being the center of attention for a few minutes, and Elise even sang happy birthday to herself and Avery :)

The final activity of the day was a pinata. If you haven't seen them lately, there is this fantastic "pull-string" variety that - while not landing anyone on America's Funniest Home videos - spares party-goers the frustrations (and danger!) of traditional pinatas. As expected, the 2nd or 3rd string opened the trap door (despite being highly against the odds), but nobody seemed to mind that only 1 person other than the birthday girls got to "play". Once the goodies started falling, any injustice was hardly noticed.

My girls had a fantastic time, and it seemed the other guests enjoyed themselves, too. It was a different looking party than I had planned for months, but whatever. At least I wasn't bored on Friday, right? ;)

Like last year, there is a separate Picasa album for "Birthday Festivities". Check there for lots of party pictures, as well as gift opening, birthday dinner, etc.

It's Avery and Elise's turn!

First it was Dada, then Nana, then Greyson and more friends - all celebrating birthdays, confusing the daylights out of Elise and Avery.

But finally, those birthdays were "all done", and it was Avery and Elise's turn! (And I'm sure that, being older than 2, you are smart enough to figure this out - but just in case: it was hard enough getting past the fact that each new birthday is "for" someone else (over and over again)... so around here, it's been Avery & Elise's turn for several days, with no distinction between birthday party day, a different day they received gifts, and their actual birth-day. I'm sure you understand.)

Whether or not they fully grasped what was going on, it was at least clear - long before the party began - that they were thrilled to find what had happened to their house while they were sleeping!

Stay tuned to hear how it all went down!

Two-Year Well Child Appointments

Today's appointments went as expected - quick and painless :) No shots, no concerns, nothing but good things from Dr. Matt about the girls' growth and development. Below are their two-year stats, though we're now into the "step on the scale and stand still, please" phase - so I hardly think they're all that accurate, especially considering it's a new scale, clothes stayed on, etc. At this point growth slows down so much though anyway, so I guess the only thing that matters is they're growing "beautifully", as was said this morning. (Seriously - third doc in a row to say they've never seen a growth chart trend so consistently. Are my children naturally perfectionists, even in things that don't have to be so precise? Oh, help us all! ;))

Elise --
weight: 25.5 lbs (33%-ile)
height: 34 in (51%-ile)*
head: 19 inches (69%-ile)

Avery --
weight: 25.5 lbs (33%-ile)
height: 33.75 in (44%-ile)*
head: 19 inches (69%-ile)

*I definitely think one of these is off, as do you if you've seen my girls in person the last 6 months. Elise is clearly more than 1/4 inch taller than Avery. I would say 1/2-3/4 inches, but whatever. Initially the nurse told me they were the same length, until I pointed out that they clearly weren't. One of them must have wiggled while she was marking, which is not at all surprising!

Anywhere, there you have it. No visit again until 3 years(!), though unfortunately I'm almost positive we'll be in at least once in the next year with a sick kiddo or two. At the very least, a nurse visit for a flu shot this fall...

Oh yeah, and perhaps a time or two to say hi to Kyle, who starts there in 2 weeks. So cool.

Happy 2nd Birthday, Elise and Avery!

If you get a minute , be sure to check out the video posted previously! If you have 13 minutes more (and/or are feeling nostalgic, here is last year's).

Today has certainly been a fun one!

The girls woke up and donned "beautiful pink birthday shirts"...

and found that some more balloons made their way to our house again while they were asleep!

Next they picked out two new Pez dispensers that we don't know are supposed to contain candy toys when we had to run to Kroger. Look, it's Hamm & Slinky Dog!

Later in the morning, Great Grandma Shirley and Grandpa Charlie came for a birthday visit, since they couldn't make it to the party last weekend... and they brought cake (#1 on the day, #2 for the week)!

When Daddy woke up after working the night shift, we decided to take him to Beckett Park to show him how brave (and dangerous) Elise and Avery have become... and how much they love playing there!

Finally it was time for the girls' Birthday Dinner. When we were deciding earlier in the week what to fix (since they don't quite understand when we ask what they would prefer), we knew we had to have broccoli - and that's definitely what went over best! True to form, they both devoured their servings and asked for more, before even touching the ABC tater tots, tomato soup and flower-shaped cheese sandwiches that rounded out the meal.

Cake (#3) and ice cream were a big hit, once we finally got to serve them. We had to sing twice and blow out candles twice, but they were getting such a kick out of it (and asking so nicely) that we couldn't help but oblige! Such silly girls :)

Now it's time for a bath and bed, and the beginning of the third year of our lives together!

Happy Birthday, Avery and Elise!

Elise & Avery's 2nd Year

Two years ago from this moment, I became not just "Jennifer", but also "Mama". It has been everything I dreamed that it would be (for a long time) ... and then some.

Go Reds!

One good thing about my dad having an appendectomy a week or so ago is that he was obviously off work a few days, and - toward the end of his "vacation" (ha!) - we were able to go to a Reds game with him, my mom, my grandma & Cassi. The only other is that we got handicap accessible seats, which were awesome for the girls with plenty of space to run around!

First stop though was a picnic lunch, though I suppose we didn't actually have to stop since Elise and Avery would just continue to snack the entire game - including their first taste of dippin' dots!

They also got to play with foam fingers...

... use binoculars...

... and listen to Cowboy, Thom & Marty on Pappy's radio.

Elise was especially into the game, shouting, "Go Reds!" and "(Jay)Bruuuuuce" - and pretty much whatever else Nana told her to shout.

I think it was a sweltering hot day, but in the shade it was just perfect... and a fantastic afternoon out! The game was really exciting, too! :)
