WDW Day 5

Monday, March 9th

Ok, so no more late nights. The girls had horrendous nights, taking turns with meltdowns that would last for hours. What seemed to have gone well obviously had a larger impact that we could see, so out the window went plans for Fantasmic and Illuminations (We had discussed each going to one alone, but would later decide that it wasn't worth the hassle). Oh, well! It's a new day now, so we were off...

We were actually heading through Epcot to the Magic Kingdom (so not an efficient way to travel, as I learned on my solo trip, but nice when you have twin girls who freak out getting in and out of a stroller!), but got distracted. I ducked into Club Cool for my almost-daily dose of Kinley and we noticed it was perfect timing to hit the Character Connection. We waited about 10 minutes (love the queue area with classic cartoons!) and had a great time with all of the characters.

Finally, we were on our way to the Magic Kingdom via the monorail. We had brought along two little Tinkers, so we headed straight for Pixie Hollow to see if it was doable after arriving so late.  When we got to Toontown, the wait times were listed at 15 minutes (Princesses) and 45 minutes (Fairies). I tell you what, I'm thinking the princesses are glad to have some people with which to share the load, no?

We decided the girls wouldn't care either way (and we have the next size Tinkerbell costumes too ;)), so we hit the Princess line. In about 2.5 minutes flat, we were in! Hmm..... a little off on the wait time! The girls enjoyed meeting the princesses, but were mostly just in awe of their dresses!  Since the line was only slightly longer for the Fairies, we figured there would be no way it would actually take 45 minutes to get back there, so we hopped in that one as well. Hooray!

We were right, it didn't take 45 minutes. It took about 65. With hungry girls, who we thought would be out long before lunchtime.  Still, it made for some cute photo ops, and Tinkerbell was FABULOUS. Just PERFECT. She talked with Elise and Avery about their training, and playtime and snacks and all the fun things they would learn from her. "How many seasons are you?" (8 months) "Ooh, you're brand new Tinkers! We're going to have a long time to spend together!"

We made a pit stop at Pete's Garage (bad pun intended), then sat on Minnie's Porch and fed the girls. We made a quick run into her house, but it was SO crowded that we headed back out as quickly as we had entered!

From here, we headed to Fronteirland for lunch at Peco's Bills. Kyle loves their burgers (and the fixin's bar), but we don't eat there often because I don't really like anything on the menu all that well.  The girls slept while we enjoyed our lunch. My favorite part though, was watching Kyle spend several minutes meticulously building his masterpiece of a burger, only to watch it immediately topple all over (his plate, not the ground (thankfully)). Crush had said it so well during Turtle Talk the previous day: "... And when something happens that is totally bogus but somewhat humerous, 'Duuuuuude'." (Love you, Kyle! :))

After lunch we watched Philharmagic (do you think the girls noticed that everything was blurry? :)) and then rode The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. The girls loved it, as we expected.  I loved watching Kyle remind Elise and Avery of all the stories we had read from the Classic Pooh Treasury before our trip as we traveled through them!

What a morning! We had accomplished so much already, at least at the pace the trip had been going! We stopped for another Dole Whip on the way out of the Magic Kingdom. For the record, if you are ever at Aloha Isle and you see me, go to the line that is furthest away. It NEVER fails that something goes dreadfully wrong in whatever line I pick, and the entire park gets served before I do. This is not that much of an exaggeration. You've been warned.  Still, the end result is ALWAYS worth the wait, and I enjoyed it very much as we rode the monorail back to Epcot.

When we got there, the girls were sleeping so Kyle and I wandered through Innoventions for a little while. There is a lot there that is new since the last time we went! We took our time walking back to the resort, even waiting on the Friendship Boat (just for the heck of it). It had been a long, hot morning and we needed to relax in the room for a while!

-      -      -      -      -      -      -      -      -      -      -      -      -      -      -      -      -      -

In the late afternoon, we headed back into Epcot for dinner. The girls were in pleasant moods, it was a bit breezier (so not as hot as the morning, thankfully, although the weather was SO beautiful the entire trip that I can hardly complain!), and we were starving! Too bad we were going to San Angel Inn :)

We are determined to eat at every restaurant on property at some point, so we usually don't repeat them that frequently. This might change, because we're running out of really good ones! I didn't notice until the end of the trip that (aside from The Wave, which is obviously new) there is a reason we hadn't eaten at a few of the "new" restaurants on our list!

I ADORE the Mexico Pavilion. It holds such special memories for me, and is one of my favorite places in the World. Apparently, however, not as a place to eat. The restaurant was packed in so tight that we could hardly hear our own conversations over those coming from surrounding tables. The food was probably not even good enough to be labeled "mediocre", but it's cool. We've been there, and we don't have to go back! :)

After dinner we rode the 3 Caballeros Gran Fiesta Tour, which the girls loved. Elise especially was hysterical to watch. She stood straight up on Kyle's lap, and turned her head side to side (and practically in a circle at times) to see what was going on around her. So sweet!   We then rode again so I could get some pictures of Avery watching as well, because she enjoyed it just the same. Unfortunately, she was content to stare out her side, so most of the pictures are of the back of her head :-P  The girls were in such fabulous moods after dinner that we took our time strolling through the World Showcase and along the Boardwalk. We even played for several minutes in the Baby Care Center (shocking, I know), with a new friend Cindy. She was such a sweetheart, and the girls loved her!

On the way out, as Avery was catching a catnap in the stroller, Pluto made a surprise visit! Any bets on at what age she will look at pictures and say it's "not fair!" that Elise got the bonus? ;)

It was absolutely the most gorgeous night thus far, and the Boardwalk was The Place to Be. We watched a magician for a few minutes before heading upstairs, and the girls remained so content. They played a while in the room before going to sleep at about 8:30. What a great day!

It was at this point in the trip that I realized our list of "If we get to its" had grown entirely too long for the number of days that were remaining. I desperately wanted to get back to the Animal Kingdom (namely for a few things like the Affection Section and Festival of the Lion King, as well as others), but the other parks still had so much more to offer for the girls, that we made a decision not to try and squeeze anything else in. What a bummer! Alas, we'd be back.... and in fact, I pulled out a calendar that same evening and began planning our return trip in October! ;)

WDW Day 4

Sunday, March 8th

As we woke up for the first time on Sunday, we looked at the clock and saw it was nearly 7:00am! The girls hadn't made a peep, and - thanks to Daylight Savings Time changes - they wouldn't be ready for a nap at the exact time the parks would start to open! Sure, we lost an hour at Disney... but if it makes for a more enjoyable trip, I'd have given up a few!

On our way to Epcot, I grabbed a Blueberry Mickey Muffin at the Bakery and Kyle grabbed a mug o' coffee at Boardwalk Joe's. We took our time and still strolled in just a few minutes after 9. As we headed toward Future World, we could see that the 1/2 Marathon was still in full swing. The later start time had a lot to do with it, I'm sure, but it actually worked out well. I don't know if people were avoiding Epcot because of the event or what, but the park was empty! We weren't sure how long it would last, but we were going to take advantage of it while we could.

Our first stop was the Land Pavilion. I had been dreaming of riding Soarin' again, and was so desperate to do so that I could practically smell the Orange Groves when I listened to the soundtrack at home. I grabbed a fast pass and then "waited" (walked right on) in the Standby Line, grabbing a rider swap pass on the way. We might both get to ride twice, with very little or no wait!
{Every time I ride it, that ride is every bit as good as the first time. It was made more sweet by sitting between two first time riders, too!}

While Kyle was riding, the girls decided to wake up. They played with their Mickey and Pluto plushes while we waited, and as soon as he returned we strapped the girls in their carriers, left the stroller behind, and headed for the Seas! Maybe Avery and Elise would get to enjoy something, too!  We walked immediately onto The Seas w/Nemo and Friends, which the girls found moderately interesting. I'm sure it pales in comparison to some dark rides, when you are too distracted by things like jacket zippers to notice fish in distant aquariums! :)  They actually enjoyed the aquariums in the pavilion after the ride much more, because they had time to notice and watch the fish.

Turtle Talk with Crush was just about to begin when we exited the ride, so we walked in to see if the girls would make it through the show. They did well, and Avery was actually captivated by Crush! Elise couldn't have cared less, and wanted to get out and go somewhere else, but she stayed very quiet. Thank you, Cheerios!

Next stop was the Imagination Pavilion, to introduce the girls to our friend Figment. They enjoyed the ride, but were - as you might expect - scared silly with the Blast(!)  We stopped in the Kodak Labs to send a quick hello to the grandparents, and 3920483 takes later, and we were all at least looking at the camera. It would have to do!
So here we were, before lunch, and we'd already ridden three rides AND posed for a postcard. What was happening?! All the excitement left the girls exhausted, so they got a bottle and settled back into the stroller while Kyle rode Soarin' on the FP. A series of unfortunate events, crabby hysterical babies, etc would leave me unable to ride again, but it's ok. We'll go back :)  I took the girls to the companion restroom to change diapers, then for a walk around to calm down until Kyle met up with us.

We would have loved to hit Sunshine Seasons for lunch at this time, but it would have obviously been impossible while the girls were asleep, since there are no strollers allowed downstairs. Electric Umbrella it is! Oh, well, I thought. I secretly love WDW Chicken Finger meals, and haven't had one in several trips! Except that the Electric Umbrella is apparently closed. Seriously, where did the Planner in me go?!

At some point during the trip thus far, we had decided we would just do our best to hang out wherever we were if the girls fell asleep somewhere on the go. This day, it meant wandering around Mouse Gear until they woke up. This girl had no complaints about that! I do, however, have a complaint about the new Vinylmation ..... things that we first saw there. Um, what? Perhaps I'm just not cultured enough or something, but .... what

We grabbed lunch at the Lotus Blossom Cafe in the China Pavilion on the way back to the hotel, eating quickly so we could get back.  Since the girls had caught a pretty decent (read: 40 minute) nap in the stroller, we thought it would be the perfect time to go for a swim!  We quickly found out they were just a few inches too small to sit in the baby pool on their own, so most of our time was spent motoring them around the Luna Park pool. They loved every minute of it, even the (multiple) times we took them underwater. What can I say, Kyle used to teach lessons ... they had no choice!

We stayed in the pool for about an hour, then headed to the room for baths/showers and naps. As I sat in the room listening to the whimsical sounds of the Boardwalk (even that blasted, obnoxious seagull!), the Resort TV music playing softly in the room, and the girls snoring away (remnants of pneumonia and all), I realized that the trip had passed the "break even" point to "I'm (finally) at least glad we came". Perhaps it would even end up a "good" trip, after all!

Before long, it was ready to head to dinner with Pooh and friends at the Crystal Palace! When we got there, there were dozens of people filling the porch, the walkways all around the restaurant, etc. Seriously, where did everyone come from? Still, the girls enjoyed playing (out of the stroller) while we waited, and we were seated in about 15 minutes.

It was during this dinner that we learned Elise and Avery really DO like the characters, so long as they haven't been up since 4:30am traveling. They loved every bit of interaction with Pooh, Piglet, Tigger and Eeyore. They loved feeling them (I'm sure the fac
t that they are like giant plush helps!). They watched as each one approached the table (including staring as they visited tables before us), interacted with them the entire time they were with us, and watched as they walked away and until they were out of sight.

After dinner (which wasn't bad either ;) ), I took Avery to the Baby Care Center to get changed and wait for Kyle and Elise. We made friends with the wonderful cast members, and soon the 4 of us were heading down Main Street to grab a spot for Spectromagic!  For whatever reason, things had worked out today and - even though the crowd situation wasn't ideal - we'd get to see Spectro & Wishes after all! I literally had tears in my eyes as it started, I was so excited.

Elise tried her darndest to stay awake for the parade, and Avery woke up for a minute here and there. They seemed to be as enamored of it as I am, from what I could tell.  ;)

We got one of my favorite spots for Wishes, too. What a beautiful night!

It was utter chaos trying to leave, as we expected, but the girls slept and we were actually transferring them to the car by 9:45pm. We were all exhausted when we got back to the room, but couldn't have asked for a better day. Finally! :)

WDW Day 3

Saturday, March 7th

The alarm(s) went off at 5am, after a better night's sleep. Elise woke up a few times, but each night was steadily showing improvement. After a quick change, we were off to the races!

We arrived at Epcot very quickly, with no difficulty at all (such a relief after the disaster during marathon weekend!) and were at the staging area within minutes. They were already letting folks in the corrals, so we lined up at the front of the stroller section and waited for the race to begin.

You may recall the incident with the Helmets. It was during this staging time that we realized it wasn't "sort of" a cover-your-butt thing on Disney's part, it was completely that. About 50% of the people we saw even had helmets for their little ones, and about 1% of them were actually wearing them. We put ours on Elise and Avery for posterity's sake, but I can assure you they didn't last long! :)

Finally, we were off!

The race course took us through a parking lot (most of the first mile) and into a back entrance to Epcot, bringing us in next to the Mexico Pavilion in the World Showcase. We had a nice run through the WS (with a little jaunt outside via the International Gateway, outside the park a bit and then back in just past the UK pavilion), then into Future World, around Spaceship Earth and back out near the Wonders of Life Pavilion. (Yes, I believe a tear or two was shed as we passed my beloved WOL.)

Along the race route we did find some characters, which was nice. I wasn't sure how much Disney would do for the smaller races, but I should have known - it was a lovely race! The characters looked beyond adorable in their royal outfits, but we didn't wait in any lines to see them. Just under 40 minutes after we started (we aren't runners, as you may recall!) we were back at the Finish. Hooray! The girls even got their own "medals", which we weren't expecting (because the forms clearly stated they wouldn't ). Adorable!

After the race, we wandered a bit during the Kids' Races (SO CUTE!) before the "Meet & Greet" breakfast we had paid for. I've never written a letter to Disney before, and I know this isn't the worst that's happened there by any stretch of the imagination, but I was SORELY disappointed in this event. It was not a small price to pay, and it had the makings of an absolutely horrible event. The food was worse than your worst catered wedding experience. A few chafing dishes of dry ham, some assorted pastries, and onions with a few potatoes mixed in. I knew it wouldn't be as lavish as the usual buffets, but at significantly more money than said buffets, I expected something remotely equivalent, with leeway given for the circumstances and location. And my previous mention of "Meet & Greet" is in quotations, because it was nothing of the sort. Instead of the Princesses coming around to visit, as was advertised, there was a horrendous line to wait in to meet them. I'm sorry, not going to happen with crabby girls at their nap time. Pretty much every reason we booked this breakfast was not even CLOSE to the way things panned out, but the terrible food is what really got me. Well, and the price.

Anyway, enough complaining. It had the makings of a horrible event, but it was a lovely breakfast anyway. Why? Because we spent it with some fabulous people. Finally the time came to head back to the hotel, as the girls got cranky and in need of a nap. As soon as we got back though, there looked to be no sleeping in our future! The girls were WIRED! We let them play a few minutes, and finally just put them in their tents to hopefully wind down. They wouldn't. Eventually, I gave them a deadline because we were all wasting our time. If they weren't asleep by 11:05, we'd swim now and sleep later. At 11 they were still jabbering away, so I got dressed, sunscreened up, etc. And at 11:04 they fell asleep. :)

As the girls and Kyle napped, I took the opportunity to go on a Treasure Hunt! With two little ones in tow, we found ourselves doing fewer of them (like, say, none), so I was more than happy to embark on my own adventure, take time for some photographs, and enjoy the Boardwalk and BWV scenery. It really is gorgeous, even if it is far from our favorite resort.

I checked out the pool, shopped a bit and, after about 90 minutes, headed back to the room. I was quite sure there weren't going to be any long naps this trip! When I got back though, the three of them were just starting to stir. It's a good thing we were set on swimming today!

Even after such a good nap, both girls were sniffly, needy, fussy... looking very ill. Please not still/again, I thought (having no idea what we'd be in for at home, obviously! ). After dawdling a bit around the room and feeding the girls, we were off to the Magic Kingdom! We hoped to stay for the evening events, but weren't holding our collective breath considering it was only about 2pm.

We waited a few minutes for the car since we forgot to call ahead, but the girls didn't mind. They enjoyed flirting with the passersby heading into and out of the Boardwalk Inn. At the MK, we grabbed a diamond parking spot (we think, although we weren't quite sure) and headed in!

It was nearing time for the 3:00 Parade (which I will continue to call just that until they stop changing the name by just one word! ), so we grabbed a spot near the Fire Station, our favorite. I ran in to City Hall to ask about the direction of the parade, and found out it was starting in Fronteirland. We knew from experience that it would be entirely too long before it reached us here, and weren't going to risk angering the girls :) so we started heading down Main Street. If we found a spot farther up the route that would be great, but otherwise we'd just head for some attractions. We ended up finding a fantastic spot in Liberty Square, but the girls slept through their first parade anyway. Go figure! (I might also point out that I sacrificed my chocolate cake from the Columbia Harbour House "lunch" that Kyle and I split, in favor of Strawberry Yogurt to share with the girls. Since they were sleeping, I ate a freakin' yogurt as it (and I) melted in sun, when I could have had a chocolate cake. The sacrifices we mamas make! :))

The parade changes, however small, were cute. I absolutely love the "celebration" attire the characters are sporting this year, and I already knew the song was better than "Disney Dreams Come True" (although not as good, IMHO, as "Share a Dream Come True"). Anyway, it was heavenly watching again!

After the parade, we headed to Fantasyland. Holy Crap. I haven't seen so many people in one place since we came on our honeymoon. We got in line for It's a Small World, but thought we'd probably end up hightailing it out of this place as soon as possible thereafter! The girls adored IASW, and it was nothing short of magical watching them watch everything going on around them! :) :)

By this point they were very cranky again, because they hate that darn stroller. We certainly won't be getting the same one again, they just need to see more than it would allow them to! (Oh, and this seems a perfect time to add that it doesn't even fit through 7/8 of the gates at the Magic Kingdom. Stupid!) We ran into Cosmic Rays for a few minutes break, where the girls and I watched Sonny Eclipse. Afterwards, we headed to the Baby Care Center for a break for them as well, before heading to the Contemporary for dinner.

As we were walking to the CR to eat at the Wave, I was so excited to actually order from a menu! I would not be disappointed. I ordered the Filet Mignon, and it was outstanding. Better than LeCellier (at Epcot), perhaps? Amazing. It literally melted in my mouth, and everything else we ate that evening was to die for as well. And who can complain at a place where the only dessert options are all samplers?!

Avery and Elise were well-behaved during dinner, but we knew they wouldn't make it back in the stroller for the rest of the evening. I was sorely disappointed that we'd miss Spectromagic and Wishes (I thought this would be our last opportunity this trip), but it just wasn't worth it.

I dropped Kyle and the girls off at the hotel and headed to Downtown Disney again, to try and make something of the evening that was still young. We hadn't had much success getting through the shops the first evening, and Kyle wasn't set on hanging out there anyway, so it seemed a perfect time.

Except, of course, that that would be too simple! The place was PACKED. Every lot was full. I drove around anyway, knowing that "Lot Full" didn't actually have to mean that, but it did. Instead of a relaxing evening shopping, I turned around and headed home to hang out with Kyle. Anything else just wasn't worth the effort!

I was really bummed at the prospect of not seeing Wishes and Spectromagic, so I took another look at our ever-changing plans to see if we could work it in. It might be possible, so we enjoyed our evening on the balcony, actually catching Illuminations this time :) , and called it a night.

Chesse Puffs for 9-month olds?

Oh, yes. :)

(And on a side note, as a bit of an update, we have been praising God for creating the minds that worked with GlaxoSmithKline to give us Zofran. It kept me alive (or so it felt) during my 8 months of all-day sickness, and it's given Avery the boost she so desperately needed to go from eating and drinking nothing, to drinking just over 20 ounces per day (a good start!). And eating cheese puffs. :))

AquaDuck!

I bought this toy for the girls before they were born, and we finally thought to get it out a little while ago. It's a great time for it, as Avery & Elise practice cause and effect and are fascinated with water. I think we'd have gotten more use out of it had we remembered to get it out earlier, but they're enjoying it for now! Besides, it was just a couple of dollars at our twins club tag sale, so no harm done! ;)

video

I must add that I have NO idea why the videos are uploading in widescreen, and chopping things off (such as my girls' heads). I'll work on it....

Update

Well, after nearly 6 hours in the ED today, Avery is a new person.  I say the ED because that's where we physically were, but our pediatrician called in ahead and had us fast-tracked in.  Please don't let that fool you though, as it did he and I -- we were still there all day!

Her bloodwork came back and showed that her CO2 was quite low (low enough to where Kyle said that had a certain kind of alkalosis not "masked" the real number (without going into too many medical details ;)) she probably would have been shipped to base and admitted, so I'm glad we went in today.  It wasn't medically urgent so we all went back and forth on the decision, but it definitely made a huge difference in getting Avery "over the hump", so to speak.

She ended up getting a bolus of 150ml fluid and some Zofran to start.  Even after just that she was acting much better and taking juice & pedialyte like the starving child she should have been!  She was still somewhat dry though, and the (fabulous) doctor that was taking care of her said that if she's here and has an IV in her little hand, we're going to really tank her up before she goes home.   So she got another 150mL, plus 60 more of fluid with dextrose (sugar) in it to help correct her low blood sugar.  At this point she was a drooly mess, crying real tears and started to get puffy from the fluid :)  She was acting 10x better than the morning, so they just rechecked her glucose (normal) and sent us on our way!

Keeping up with the intake should be easier now that a) she's had fluids and is out of the vicious cycle she was in (dehydration -> crappy feeling -> decreased appetite -> dehydration), and b) we have more Zofran available if we need it.  Man, I love that stuff (speaking from experience, as you all know quite well!).  Earlier, she would get 1/2 an ounce in her and immediately vomit.  As long as that isn't an issue anymore, Kyle and I should be capable of pushing fluids enough to keep her hydrated.  Let's hope, anyway.

While we were there, we also discovered she has croup.  She got steroids and now of course we'll be watching Elise to see if their coughs aren't "back", but "new".  It's likely, considering how communicable croup is, but whatever.  We'll wait and see, but I imagine they've shared it.  I wouldn't mind that at all, honestly, because it's easily treatable.  Between that and the boost we received in getting Avery over this GI bug, we'll be on our way to a healthy household.

Of course, that is until Elise picks up this GI thing in full swing, but at least she's my good eater.  We'll pray that if she gets it, she can at least keep herself going without as much (costly and time-consuming) intervention!

Put on Hold

The WDW trip report, along with everything else in our lives, is currently on hold.  The girls started getting sick the day we got back.  As if there weren't enough reasons to not want to be home...

It started with a cold (Avery), then the horrible coughing fits returned in earnest, even requiring breathing treatments at times (Elise), then a "little" GI bug (both girls).  Now it's coughing fits (both girls), a little GI bug (Elise) and a monster of a GI bug (Avery).  Avery has taken 7-10 ounces of formula each day for the last 3-4 days.  All while vomiting more than I have EVER managed to in my life (today's projectile stuff lasted a good 20 seconds, and was just gush after gush after gush, all over her, me and my couch).  All while having 8-10 diapers o' diarrhea per day, including the lovely water loss stool which makes it impossible to tell if she's peeing enough.  Sorry for the graphic picture, I have no energy to filter right now.  Trust me, it could have been worse :)

Anyway, I'm exhausted.  The coughing keeps me up, the worry about walking a fine line before hospitalization keeps me concerned, the combination of both makes me a total nut.

Believe me, I'm hoping the entries won't be on hiatus too long.  We haven't been "well" since January, but that's just Winter in Cincinnati.  The last two bouts though, where Kyle and I actually get pretty worried and even their doctor was concerned, have been rough.

Please keep both girls in your prayers.  Pray that Elise continues to stay oxygenated despite her breathing and coughing issues.  Pray the same for Avery, although that isn't my first concern for her right now.  Not because Breathing isn't, like, the second most important thing in our ABC's ;) ... but because she's just "kind of sick" in that regard.  But pray for her otherwise, that she first might take in some liquid, and then eventually might even keep some of it in her.  She's started acting kind of lethargic today, which has piqued my concern.  Pray for Kyle and I, that we would make the right decisions regarding their care.  We are trusted with a lot because of our backgrounds, but with that comes lots of doubt when you're a sleep deprived mama who happens to be an RN, instead of just an RN.

I hope the rest of you are enjoying the beautiful weather (at least locally)!  The sunshine sure is nice anyway!

WDW Day 2

Friday, March 6th

The girls wake up every morning around 5am and chatter at the ceiling and their crib toys for about 20 minutes. It's fairly harmless, and they usually go back to sleep fairly quickly for another hour and a half or so. Not in WDW! The close proximity of their cribs had them both standing and bouncing and reaching for one another like crazy kids in a matter of seconds, so this mama hopped out of bed to replace The Sheets. (Did you see the pictures from Day 1 to know what I'm talking about? ) We obviously didn't leave these on overnight, but they clearly needed them in order to get any more sleep... which I thought was absolutely necessary! So, I got up and showered to keep an eye on things while they quickly fell back asleep.

In the shower, I felt optimistic. It's a new day, let's start a good vacation from here forward! I thought. When the girls got up at about 6:30am, I told them the same thing. They drank their breakfast and played on the floor, and everyone was full of smiles. Much better so far!

Kyle woke at about 7 and made the trek for mug refills. Just as we were getting ready to leave, the girls seemed tired. We had a park to see, but I wasn't about to argue with a nap if they'd take one, even if it didn't make any "sense" to me! :-P They ended up napping from about 8:15-9:15, so we were already making significant improvement in the sleep department for the day! :)

Finally, after stopping in the lobby to talk to some of our new "friends" (the fabulous Cast Members at the Boardwalk Inn/Villas) and take a few pictures, we were on our way to the Animal Kingdom!

We got there just in time to snag the last AAA Diamond Parking Spot (that we could see anyway), which was fabulous. We set up the stroller (fighting the girls, of course) and headed in! Our first stop was to get a fastpass for Expedition Everest, because it was the one grown-up thing we wanted to ride here. It was then almost time for the girls' lunch, so we headed to the Flame Tree BBQ to order our own and start them with theirs. I know for a fact that most of the counter service restaurants in the parks used to open at 10:30am, because we ALWAYS used to eat then. We're usually up so early at home anyway that it's not a stretch for us to eat lunch then (especially if we don't eat breakfast), and that way we beat the crowds. Blame it on a recession or whatever you'd like, but none of them do anymore. Flame Tree opened at 11, but several of them didn't even open until 11:30! It was about 10:40 at that point anyway, so we just headed to the seating area (one of our favorite places to chill in the AK) and fed the Elise and Avery first while we waited for the restaurant to open.

Let me correct myself. This USED to be one of our favorite places to chill in the AK. I never minded the birds that would hang out nearby, but there were horrible problems with them this time. Ducks literally nipped at Kyle's feet. What is UP with birds these days?! Recall, if you will, the stupid sparrow incident. Seriously, they're all losing their minds. But I digress....

After lunch, we headed back to EE. The ride is always a decent one, and you can't argue with using a fastpass and the rider swap program! While we rode, the girls napped in the stroller in the shade, right outside the exit. When we finished, we thought it was probably time to head to the Expo (for the Princess 1/2 and Family 5K) and back to the hotel room for a bit. Since the girls were still sleeping, we walked the Discovery Island trails a bit so as not to wake them when transferring them to the car. We were learning!

After just a quick little nap (15 minutes or so), we were on our way to the Wide World of Sports to pick up our race packet.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

I must say, they did the Expo right with the Princess event. I'm not sure if it's just the fact that the theme lent itself to better merchandising or if it was the fact that it was a much smaller enrollment, but the packet pick-up was much more enjoyable, even with two tired girls in tow. It was much more organized, much easier to get through (as in physically getting around), and the stuff was SO cute! Had we been running in a timed race that we had trained for, I would have been all over so much of it!

After the incredibly long walk back to our car (what with Braves spring training and the Expo going on at the same time that afternoon), we headed back to the room to let the girls play and nap. Avery only slept about 30 minutes and was rarin' to go again, but Elise slept over an hour. These days, that's a decent nap at home!

As Elise and Avery were taking their afternoon bottles and I was enjoying a soda with the balcony doors open, I couldn't help but notice the day had already been so much nicer! The babies were still thrown for a loop, crying any time we disappeared around a corner or tried to put them down on the hotel floor (bed and couches and cribs were fine, but the floor took an adjustment each and every time ), but overall it at least felt like the pendulum was swinging in the right direction!

We headed back to Animal Kingdom at about 4 for our dinner reservation. Odd how nobody at all is entering then! We missed Mickey's Jammin' Jungle Parade by a few minutes, but we knew the naps were infinitely more important, however short! We were a bit early for our Tusker House reservation so we kept walking to see what the line for Kilimanjaro Safaris looked like. The stand-by sign said 20 minutes, but I ventured a guess that it was incorrect. The park was totally clearing out, and I assumed they might have just not updated it toward the end of the day. I was right! We literally walked on to what was almost our own vehicle at about 4:30pm. The animal viewing was decent, and the girls seemed to enjoy actually being able to ride something!

{How ridiculous is it that most of the way through our second day of the trip we were averaging 0.5 attractions per day?! Who cares, though, we were enjoying ourselves and actually calling it a vacation!}

We signed in for our ADR at Tusker House a few minutes early, while Avery hung out with her new buddy Fernando. I was shocked at how quickly she reached out for him, given her usual stranger anxiety!

The staff outside was remarkable, and our server Joe was even better! The food was excellent and the girls enjoyed lots of new things there as well. I hadn't intentionally booked multiple buffets in a row, but it ended up being perfect for babies of this particular age! :-P

Since our dinner was scheduled at park close, we thoroughly enjoyed our quiet walk out, savoring the empty park along the way. I wondered if the CMs would rush us out at all, but they didn't even come close. There were a few out at various junctions to make sure we were at least headed in the right direction, but nobody cared whether or not we were in a hurry, and many even encouraged us (and those leaving with us) to stop and take pictures.

It was an absolutely gorgeous evening with a slight breeze, the girls were very playful, and I was the happiest walking through there that I had been the whole trip.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

We decided to make a quick trip to Downtown Disney that evening. I love spending time (and money!) there anyway, but there were a few things in particular we were looking for. First, I needed to replace a necklace. On my solo trip in December 2007, I had purchased a beautiful Minnie necklace from the Arribas Brothers shop in the Mexico Pavilion. The pendant fell off at some point though, and I think it got lost forever during a party we had. The point was, I needed a new one. I found a gorgeous classic Mickey one that night, and I was thrilled! There isn't a clasp, per se, on this one, so I'm hoping it holds up a bit better.

The second thing we were looking for, which we wouldn't find the entire trip, was new Disney Bears for the girls. You might recall the ones I got when I was pregnant with the girls. They went to the hospital with us when the girls were born, and they LOVE them now. The only problem is that the shed. A lot. I would find my newborn girls with a mouth full of fur, and it hasn't gotten much better even after being washed a few times! I was looking for the cute cloth ones they used to carry, but we saw none.

Anyway, DTD was hopping that night. All of the parking lots except one full. No surprise though, as the night remained absolutely beautiful. We watched a CM teaching High School Musical dance moves to a crowd of adorable kids while we fed the babies. We hit a few stores, but weren't really there long. I picked up a 2009 DVC pin and a few toy sets for the girls, and we were "home" by about 7:45pm.

The girls played for a little while and went down to sleep like saints. You can bet we were knocking on wood until our hands were sore, but they did! :)

While they were sleeping, Kyle and I settled into the room a bit more and got things ready for the early race morning to follow. We reminisced a bit about our half marathon trip (January 2007) and all the things surrounding it, as well as everything that had happened since. I heard fireworks going on, but couldn't for the life of me figure out what they would be at 8pm. I knew they weren't Illuminations, so I didn't even really pay attention to how long they lasted, hear the blasting finale, etc. After all, Epcot ALWAYS closes at 9pm, 9:30 sometimes in the summer.

Except now. :)

Now, when Future World has EMH in the evening, the World Showcase closes at 8pm and Illuminations happens at that time as well. What in the world?! Something so major (to a crazy person like myself), and I was completely clueless. I think that Kyle secretly enjoyed it....

So there we were, sitting on our balcony at 9pm wondering where the fireworks were. No joke. We debated what day it was and whether Disney would do something so confusing as to have the event early for Daylight Savings, even though it didn't happen until 2am. We remembered that it wasn't even the right day for DST and confused ourselves more. Yes, my friends, we were that senile the first few days into this "vacation". :-P

We laughed that we would have actually been able to watch and enjoy them, prayed that the girls would stay asleep after starting off so well, and headed to bed shortly thereafter. It was shaping up to be a different kind of trip than we had ever taken, but not really a different one than I was expecting.... 0.5 attraction per day average and all. :)

Here are the pictures!

9-Month Appointment

Not a lot to share from today's visit!  Dr. B was very pleased with the girls' development, they played together a lot (with him) and he even got Avery to smile within about 10 seconds of trying.  No shots today, and we have the option to wait on a heel stick for CBC+lead until "some time" between now and their next check-up.  Not today, thanks! :)

The stats:

Elise -
Weight: 17.35 lbs (18th %ile)
Head Circumference: 17.5 inches (59th %ile!)
Length: 27.5 inches (38th %ile)

Avery -
Weight: 16.45lbs (8th %ile)
Head Circumference: 17.5 inches (59th %ile!)
Length: 27.25 inches, though I actually thought it looked a bit longer (31st %ile)

They're growing like weeds!  (And have big heads! :-P)

He is not, of course, worried about either of their illnesses.  We're not either, but it sure would be nice to have healthy babies.  I hardly remember what that's like!

WDW Day 1

Approximately 452 days since the girls (in utero) and I had left the fabulous Walt Disney World resort, we were finally headed back. It had been a few months longer for Kyle, but he's kind of a robot and refuses to show excitement about said trips, so I don't feel at all sorry for him. ;) The planning for this trip had been a very different one since - if you have ever seen an infant you know - babies don't like to let you get settled. I am very much a Type A, planner sort (as you well know) if you're reading this blog you know we've been on a schedule from the start. Again, if you've ever been around an infant you know that a "schedule" means a routine that lasts a week or two, until baby (or babies as the case may be) change things up on you. I'm proud to say that ours doesn't throw us too far off course usually, but that's at home. Familiar rooms, familiar cribs, naptimes and feeding routines, etc. That's not at WDW.

For this trip, I had "planned" to come back to the room for one chunk of time each day. It is completely unrealistic to plan to come back for all of our scheduled "nap times", but I also refuse to be that family in the park that has pushed their boundaries day after day. It just won't work like that for us, and I know it!

Still, planning a trip that includes children I'd never even technically met proved to be a bit hard, and didn't really get much easier until a few weeks before we left. Heck, you know I can't even figure out what size clothing to buy ever!

At 3:30am every day, I'm awake. This is one of many times throughout each night that I am, but I obviously don't get up for the day most of the time. When the alarm is set to go off at 4 though, as the case was on our departure day, I obviously was not going back to sleep. I woke Kyle up and we started getting ready to head out. We were finally getting back to WDW!

At about 4:40am, we got the girls up. We changed diapers and assumed they would fall back to sleep in the car, but they were wide awake. Is it possible they were "Too excited to sleep!" at 8 months old?! Did I have some Disney junkies on my hands already?!

I'm sure not, but the fact remains that they babbled and laughed and played the entire way to the Dayton airport. This would become an issue later ..

At about exit 43 (which means absolutely nothing to any of you, except that it's on the way to the airport), I looked at Kyle as When You Wish Upon a Star was playing (the Jesse McCartney version off of one of the Disneymania CDs) and said "Kyle, we are taking OUR CHILDREN to Walt Disney World. Can you believe it?" To which he replied something like, "I know... it's pretty cool. We always used to talk about it, and it's here!". (Seriously, probably the most emotion he's shown ever, to date. Including during our wedding and the birth of our girls. Probably close to the last I'll ever see too, I'm sure :)). It really was special though, and something we had dreamt about for quite some time!

Speaking of the aforementioned song, I had made a CD for the drive. I told you I was bored out of my mind the day before travel day! I had tried to time it perfectly with the drive and parking, including - but not limited to - a variety of Disney soundtrack songs, park music and non-Disney stuff that was applicable, a variety of song styles (considering I got reprimanded for blaring upbeat Disney stuff "too early" on the last drive!), etc. I put a lot of work into it (mostly for the challenge itself), and then we decided to have Kyle drop me, the girls and the Stuff off while parking the car. I made him promise to listen and tell me how close I was with my timing. He loves me for who I am, which is a very good thing, and found it cute instead of obnoxious. For the record, I was about 4 minutes off. Must try harder next time...

At about 5:45am, the girls continued to be wide awake and flirting with everyone that passed by while waiting at the airport.

Holy crap, I thought to myself, this is ridiculous. I was referring to the amount of luggage we had, considering we used to travel so daggone efficiently! :) Not even pictured was the (awkwardly-shaped but incredibly useful) carseat bag that was a lifesaver in checking the girls' seats. Seriously though, we were a crazy mess trying to get ourselves and the girls and all of our Stuff from point A to B to C and all the other places they make you take it that we never noticed until we were in dire need of about 2983 more arms!

As I had mentioned, I had every possible scenario covered with regards to our carry-on luggage and things we had to "declare" to security. I'm a former member of the "diamond" group of travelers (on the TSA sign.. never mind :P) that had everything ready and caused no trouble, so "breaking all the rules" (albeit legally) was something new for me. As predicted since I was so well-prepared, the TSA was outstanding throughout this whole trip. They have an entire lane for "Families and Liquids" and we were treated so well, put through so efficiently (with just a quick "pat down" because of the stuff we were carrying), etc. Everyone was so friendly, loved on the girls a bit (helpful, I'm sure, to have them with us!) and we were through in no additional time at all.

The girls ate breakfast while waiting for the plane, and sat and played for a while. They would be due for a nap as soon as we were on the plan, which should have been perfect!

Should have, of course, except that they didn't nap. Why would they?! They were fine on the plane in that being on the plane didn't bother them, but lack of sleep was certainly evident as they tried to squirm out of our arms repeatedly, laughed and squealed deliriously, and fussed just a little. Honestly, it could have been much worse. They didn't scream, they didn't really cry... they just didn't sleep! Avery slept about 20 minutes, Elise probably an hour (in chunks). Bear this in mind as you keep a running total of sleep since 4:30am....

As we always do on this particular flight (yes, we try and fly on the same flight every trip - it just works out well for our schedule! :)), we were at the gate in Orlando about 25 minutes ahead of schedule. We waited 7 or 8 minutes for the previous plane to leave, and then it took a while to get off the plane (we're used to sitting in the front, but because of errors with seating assignments (FYI - two infants can't sit in the same row!), we were towards the back. :(

Still, we were at MCO, ready to run a few errands (seriously, kids throw things for a loop, don't they?! ;) ) and then FINALLY be Home!

I waited for the luggage and fed the girls while Kyle went to get the car. I stuffed them silly so that they'd be ready for a good, long nap. Now it was just mama who was starving!

Kyle returned with a Dodge Avenger, which is hands-down the smallest car we've ever rented, especially considering it's classified as a "mid-size". We BARELY fit our luggage and the carseats in... almost not cool! The girls couldn't see a thing except seat backs and doors, but it got us to our destination and didn't have any weird shifting that Kyle couldn't figure out so I didn't really complain.

We sat for ages at toll booths that had only 1 lane open (?!), ran into the most crazy, crowded Walmart I have ever seen (ugh!) and I was finally REALLY excited. Elise and Avery were both asleep, and I realized that I hadn't even been all that excited on the plane because I was so consumed with keeping them quiet.

Finally, FINALLY, at about noon, as the girls were fast asleep, we made our first trip through the gates of the Walt Disney World resort as a family. :)

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

We got to the Boardwalk Inn/Villas just after noon and attempted to check in. Our room wasn't ready. I know that with every hotel it is never a guarantee to check in early, but NEVER in my life have I really had to wait for a room. Sometimes a room with a particular request isn't ready when we arrive early, but we usually just forgo the request in favor of a place we can actually set foot into. I realize now that there are just a few studios that are on the Boardwalk (or at least I think I read that somewhere), so I'm sure that was the issue. I wasn't angry at them, but at myself because I hadn't even considered the possibility. Our stroller rental was also not there yet, so we had NOTHING. I had given all of our luggage to the bell staff when our car was parked. I stopped at the Bell Staff counter to ask if there was any way to bother them for our luggage so that I could at least have the baby carriers, credit card, etc (seriously - I had NOTHING on me!). A Cast Member named Jim (and all of the staff, really) was wonderfully understanding and let me go back to their storage room to "our" shelf and get whatever I needed. Meanwhile, he went off and found us two strollers (like the ones they sell (not rent) at the parks). They covered the girls in stickers and entertained them with balloons while we were trying to reevaluate our plans. The strollers didn't recline (so we knew there would be little "nap-finishing" taking place unless we could get a room), but they were better than nothing, and an extraordinary gesture that you wouldn't find at any downtown hotel on another vacation!

We headed for the boardwalk to find some lunch. We were all very tired and hot, and getting harassed by dozens of seagulls because a particular family quasi near us had been feeding them for what appeared to be all afternoon. Every person that walked by on the Boardwalk had to duck and dodge and gasp as a gull swooped past them. No lie.

The afternoon really wasn't going as planned.....

By this point, if you have been keeping track, the girls have had between 50 and 70 minutes of sleep since 4:30am. That doesn't bode well for 8 month olds who are also getting over pneumonia, etc. They were SO crabby. We called at about 2 (after killing an hour and a half or so) and the room was still not ready. Unsure of what else to do, we headed to Epcot (in our long-sleeved, gross travel clothes!) to get our annual passes. (Epcot is just a short walk from the Boardwalk!)

Since the room was STILL not ready, we headed into the World Showcase. We strolled through the gardens in the UK, sat there for a little while. The crowds were totally unexpected!

I was fast approaching a breaking point. I was doing VERY well with the total mess in which our plans had been thrown, but I was not doing well with the girls. I couldn't tell if they were still sick, just tired, just hot, a combination of all of the above, but they were monsters. MONSTERS. They screamed bloody murder whenever we stopped. When we laid them down to change diapers and/or put them back the stroller, they screamed louder. Both Elise and Avery were beyond rotten when they weren't getting their way. Fine, I can handle that since it's been a long day. The only problem is, I couldn't figure out for the life of me what "their way" was!

After a near-breakdown, I told Kyle we should head to the baby care center. It would be air-conditioned, quieter, maybe we could calm the girls down. If nothing else, we could cool off and PUT them down, just for a while. This was the key, and we are thrilled that we learned it fairly quickly in the trip.

I told some of you already, but this might have been the worst possible time in Elise's and Avery's short life to have taken this trip, although we couldn't possibly have known. As you know, they've been crawling, working on standing and cruising, etc. They had this new found freedom, and then we took them to a place where they can't exercise it. The time in the baby care center quickly demonstrated that - even when they were BEYOND tired and the quickest fix would have been some good sleep - we could always buy time just simply by letting them get down and explore. Even when Avery was hit (fairly hard) in the head with a dump truck by a "friend", they were still the happiest they had been the entire day. :)

By about 3:30 our room was ready, so we headed back to gather our luggage, etc very quickly before dinner.

If you're anything like me, you might be thinking I'm a terrible parent for even considering keeping our Chef Mickey's reservation after the girls have had such little sleep. Trust me, I went through all of that. I actually had to convince myself to keep it, but I'm glad I did. By the time we got back to the room, the timing was just all wrong for a "real" nap if I wanted any chance of getting the girls back into as close a "normal" swing of things as I could. We left as quickly as we could (which meant no time to unpack and no showers ), so that we could get the girls to catch a catnap in their carseats by driving to the Contemporary via "the long way" (driving around in circles throughout the World). I doubted myself every step of the way, but it turned out to be the right move for us. The girls were still somewhat crabby but we were all a little bit refreshed after hanging out in the room a few minutes, and we were optimistic that things would start settling down a bit.

Besides... the Minnie outfits we had bought months prior looked absolutely adorable, we got some of the first smiles we had from my girls in several hours, and we were about to see Mickey!

(So why didn't I feel good about any of it?)

By this point, probably due to lack of sleep and lack of good food and girls that honestly had been grating on my nerves (through no fault of their own, but all the illness) for several weeks, I felt no magic. We saw the Castle on our way in, and I still felt nothing. I was so sad that my girls had been having the most miserable day of their young lives in what was supposed to be our Happy Place. I questioned whether we should have even come on the trip when they weren't even totally healthy yet. I questioned how they would handle the characters on little sleep and if it would scar them for the entire trip. I pretty much questioned everything I did, which is SO unlike me. To be honest, from the time I was pregnant to the time the girls were born and since, I'm a pretty confident mom. I never had the first-time-mom jitters or psychoses that some have , I'm just pretty level-headed about it. Not about most things, but about the girls. I think I made up for it that night, I assure you.

Time to perk up though, and introduce the girls to my friend Mickey and his pals!

We got our picture taken as is customary before a meal at Chef Mickey's, and it was hilarious. The girls were fascinated by the monorail whizzing by (through the lobby of the hotel!) and the commotion otherwise occurring around us, so I don't have to tell you we didn't buy any of the (mostly over-priced) pictures!

I did get a few of the girls playing in the waiting area, though. I think they're pretty cute, and from the looks of them, you wouldn't even know they were little devil children all day! :)

After all the anticipation, all the questions of whether the girls (Avery especially) would be able to "handle" the characters.... they honestly couldn't have even cared less that they existed! They were so excited by the plethora of finger foods in front of them, something they had been working on at home, that the characters would literally jump up and down and tap on the girls' heads and shoulders to get their attention, and they barely got any interaction out of them. The corn, macaroni and cheese, noodles, muffins, chicken, etc was just INFINITELY more exciting!

Eventually they paid a bit of attention, but it was incredibly anti-climactic! Avery was a bit hesitant at times, but did much better than we thought considering my once crazy-flirtatious social butterfly has developed a pretty significant bout of stranger anxiety. Perhaps the next time they meet Mickey & friends will be a bit more entertaining.... still, some cute shots!

After dinner, since the girls were doing well and we wanted to try to keep them up until bedtime (you know, if it wasn't going to be too traumatic), we took the monorail over to the Magic Kingdom. BIG mistake. The crowds were, again, unblelievable. This should have been a slow time! We could hardly get through anywhere, a fact which was made infinitely worse by the spectacle that twins always are (seriously, you'd think they were uncommon) and then compounded by the side-by-side stroller and matching outfits. Don't get me wrong, I think my girls are the cutest on the planet (as any mama should!) ... but I'd still like to go about my merry way and don't appreciate you stopping to stare while I'm trying to get to my castle and my first Dole Whip Pineapple Float in entirely too many months!

The Dole Whip was outstanding of course, but otherwise the night was a total disaster. We headed back to the room as quickly as we could, let the girls play for a while, then put them to bed. The TOTAL meltdown began at about 8:15pm and lasted several hours. The girls were honestly freaking out to the point that Elise almost required a breathing treatment. You can't have an anxiety attack at 8 months old, but if you could I would be 100% sure they both were. The sleep totals for the day (from 4:30am-10:30pm) totaled right around 2 hours each, so I'm sure that was a major factor plus the fact that they were in a completely unfamiliar surrounding. We consoled them the best we could until they were just completely wiped out.

We obviously didn't watch Illuminations (the Epcot fireworks) from our balcony. We didn't unpack. We didn't hang out, we didn't talk, we didn't figure out our plans for the next day. Instead, I bawled my eyes out and called around to discuss details that would be necessary in case we cut our trip short. As in 7 days short, and left the following day. Kyle - who is the most even-keeled person I know, namely because he has no emotions whatsoever ;) - was just about to freak out. If I could have videotaped the chaos that was in our room that night, you could have used it as a torture device somewhere. The girls fits resounded so loudly in that small room, and we were all so tired, that I was going absolutely bonkers. In the midst of it, I praised God that it wasn't late at night and we shouldn't have too many complaints from the neighbors. Still, my Happy Place had not made me the least bit happy, and this was even after having VERY low expectation for this trip. (I swear! :))

There were two more GIANT meltdowns in the middle of the night (one for each girl) that probably did wake the neighbors (sorry if you were one of them! ) and left me with about 2 hours of sleep and a frustrated mess, and left Kyle not much better off.

The trip would improve dramatically, but some time in the middle of that first night I just cried and prayed that we could actually "start" our vacation tomorrow, a bit more rested (although not well-rested by any means), and forget that this first day even happened.

I had considered embedding pictures in this posts here, but it just takes too long. I'd NEVER get caught up if I did that! Instead, I'll send you a link. I've pared it down quite a bit from the amount I took, to where I think the ones left are all worthwhile! ;)

I will share one thing here, since it never works out right on other sites. Wasn't our view gorgeous?! (Click to Enlarge. Hopefully.)

And the rest of the Day 1 Pictures. Just as an FYI, that's a flickr slideshow. You can look at the pictures individually, but not very big. I'm evaluating paying for more space on picasa versus using flickr in the future, but I won't know how I feel for a while. At least this way you can see the photos from each day, and eventually I'll let you know where they are in case you want to look again! :)

9-Months!

As I mentioned in my previous post, Elise and Avery are getting so big, so quickly! We'll update you after the appointment tomorrow, but I can tell you they have definitely gotten longer and HEAVIER! :-P

As you will soon read, they ate a TON of finger foods in Walt Disney World! We stopped keeping track so you won't get a full list of the things they eat now, but some of the new things included cheese cubes, macaroni and cheese, yogurt (with help of course!), tortilla chips & baked lays (just a few ;)), a french fry, muffins, chicken & pork (small pieces), lots of fresh and cooked veggies and fruits, etc. They loved feeding themselves and really started to pick out which things they preferred off the table.... but ultimately they'd finish just about everything! They have grown extremely fond of Cheerios (all types!), which I love because they're so much cheaper than puffs! They both struggle a bit with the sippy cup still, depending on the variety, but they definitely can "get it" when they try. Elise is the most consistent with it still, and successfully drinks out of it on her own probably 50-75% of the time. We're going to really start trying to use it more frequently so that we can say "Bye Bye Bottles" by the time they are a year old! The same goes for the pacifier.... they have already been using it only for naps and bedtime (for several months now), but we're going to get back on track weaning that as well. Wish us luck! :)

Their motor skills are blowing my mind, both gross and fine. I've been keeping you somewhat up to date on gross motor skills, but here's the rundown -- both girls are crawling at full-speed, getting into EVERYTHING. Both of them pull up to their knees like they've done it forever, with Elise pulling up to a stand with the same amount of ease. She "cruises" a lot, too, when she's up there! She's never tried yet to make it long distances, but will move around a square toy or the coffee table like a champ. Avery will take a few "steps", but is extremely leary of how off-balance she feels when she's moving. :)

Honestly, none of that was too mind-boggling because I know about when babies start to do that stuff. The things I had forgotten though, are the fine-motor skills. I can't believe how efficiently the girls pick things up with a pincer grasp and put them straight into their mouths! ;) They are also starting to have such a purposeful play! I will tell a longer story about Elise on the plane ride home that illlustrates better, but they are so intrigued by putting toys into and out of containers, etc with such determination and, honestly, skill! How the heck do babies learn these things?! :-P It's been a fun several days watching them really communicate what they want, except for when those "communications" turn into tantrums from my oldest, crazy daughter. She has always been the, um, passionate one, but she can already throw a tantrum like the best of them. The unfortunate thing (for me) is that they don't yet understand "no"! :)

Avery's teeth, as I mentioned, have finally popped through. She has 2 on the bottom that are awfully cute! Elise's top teeth broke through while we were out of town, but you can only see them when she is laughing. Check the picasa album (in today's "milestone" photos) for a good one of the upper two!

They continue to string together consonants with inflection that cracks me up. They have also recently learned such crucial (;)) social skills as making noises by covering & uncovering their mouths, saying and waving bye-bye, crawling to someone and hanging on their feet when they want held (lucky us!), etc. They really are turning into such big girls, I can't hardly believe it. I have such mixed emotions on the matter, as I'm sure most of you can relate!

I hope I haven't forgotten anything to share. Both girls are sick (again!) - Elise with a horrific cough and Avery with a GI bug it would seem, but after they are well and now that we are back from our trip I'll try to keep up more consistently - especially with videos, while they're so entertaining. Here's a quick one for you now, giving you a bit of an idea why I can't get great pictures of them lying down anymore. They know what they want, and they go for it! :-P

They're hardly babies anymore!

I feel like I took two little baby girls to WDW world with me, and brought home two little princesses! They are changing CONSTANTLY through this 8-9 month milestone! You'll see in their 9-month post (hopefully coming up) that they are into and learning so many new things and just getting to be little girls instead of babies! Just a quick sneak peak...

Big-girl outfits --

Big-girl play --

And even big-girl carseats!

They LOVE the seats, and were the happiest they've been in the car for quite some time! They can peek and see one another, watch themselves in the mirror, look out the window.... it's wonderful, for all of us! ;)

It is awfully hard to sleep in them though, so it's a good thing it rarely happens! Yesterday we were out longer than we had anticipated, but they didn't seem to mind. My neck would have been killing me, even today! :)

Speaking of WDW, I assure you I'm starting the trip report soon! I actually succeeded in getting every picture sorted (and many deleted, don't worry!) the very first day we were back... that's got to be some sort of record. I wanted to give you this though, to keep up on our current life the best we could until I can get around to writing about our trip. I'm hoping it will be worth your wait though, even if just for pictures of some pretty sweet little girls! :) :)

We're Home!

I hate the day weeks after Disney trips!  I wish we were still there, although the girls are thoroughly enjoying "remembering" all of their toys, their cribs, the dog, etc.  It's hilarious!

We had a wonderful time (even if it did take quite a while to adjust to travel with the girls...) and have TONS of pictures and stories to share!  If you've joined our lives since the inception of this blog, that means you've never had the pleasure(?:)) of a "trip report".  I will be writing one for an internet message board full of my fellow Disney Crazies :) and will tone it down a bit before posting here, but it will still be chock full of details, details, details!  Less so on a trip where I was wrangling two mobile infants than on previous trips, but I assure you it will still be long.  I thought you deserved a warning :)  I also assure you it will take a while to get "up", but please know I'm working my fastest (mostly for my own benefit, while Kyle is home!).  I have 2200+ pictures, though, to sort through on new software (not including race photos and photopass photos), so I'm not sure how quickly "my fastest" will be.

We're looking forward to (and already talking about) our next trip back!  Until I can get back here though, I will leave you with one "race day" photo.  I find it absolutely hysterical that the girls are showing off their medals!

A Few Photos...

... to tide you over while we're gone visiting Mickey!  :)

Here are just a few from when we were setting up the study and the new computer, at the end of February.  Perhaps some video to come...

Disney's Boardwalk Villas

If you're bored, take a look around at a few sites pertaining to the resort where we are staying!

This is a new resort for us, so you can bet we're checking it out extensively alongside of you!  Well, you know, except we're actually there..... :-P

Lots of pictures, I promise!

Elise & Avery are ready to take on WDW!

The girls are fast asleep, dreaming of tomorrow morning when they'll get up bright dark and early for their first trip to Walt Disney World!

While Disney Vacation Club resorts offer free Wifi to members staying on points, we won't be utilizing it!  One of the things that keeps us going back to WDW or Disney Cruise Line is the ability to completely immerse ourselves in the World, and leave behind "real life" for the time we're there.  Of course we have our phones and aren't totally cut off from civilization ;)... but it's completely freeing to not have phones ringing, email to check, facebook statuses to update, message boards to follow, blogs to update, etc.  Of course this means we're behind when we come back, but it's oh so worthwhile to us while we're there!

That being said, I've scheduled a few posts to occur while I'm gone just so you don't wander too far away! ;)  I had intended to have more planned, but I just can't quite get things to mesh between new software and old hardware as easily as I had hoped.

Please take care, and we'll "see" you again in just over a week!
