We ended up taking the girls "trick or treating", though a very modified version. We walked around the neighborhood with them in their wagon and, for the most part, chatted with and checked out the other kids. We did stop by some houses for a few treats if people were out in the driveway, etc, but didn't really go door-to-door or knock on the doors begging for candy for our kids ;) We did have a visit from the local fire department though, which was lots of fun!
In order to keep them occupied (read: not climbing out of the wagon), we started them off right away with candy bracelets. Elise just loved wearing hers, while Avery went to town trying to eat hers (read: sucking on it and making a giant, tie-dyed mess!).
They enjoyed saying please and thank you at every treat stop, and of course had to try out each and every piece they could get their hands on - through the wrappers, of course!
Eventually, Elise took interest in putting the candy into (and out of, and into) her bag... but the biggest hit of the night was definitely when a few of the couples down the street let the girls go to town grabbing what they wanted out of the bowl by the handful. They were quite funny! :)
It was a little chilly, so we made it about an hour before heading back inside to clean up and get ready for bed. We ended up with a little bit of candy (score, since our kids are not really allowed eating most of it!) but not hoards of it - which is perfect, if you ask me. And my scale.
Hope you had an enjoyable Halloween weekend, whatever you did!
