Checking in...

Very quick hello, since it's been a week or so! We just got back from a lovely shower in Ottawa (our first!). Opening Day is finally here tomorrow, so Reds at 2 and Braves at 7. It also means I have to return to work, which I am dreading more than ever after the drama last week while I was on vacation. And it should be interesting seeing how long I can sit at my desk with one of my right ribs now apparently pushed out of place. Do you know how much I love these babies?! (I really do, I just wish I were a lot bigger, or it was June. Either one would be fine at this point!) :)

Sheesh!

Apparently the babies (or maybe just the placentas? It seems nicer, albeit less believable, to blame things on something so icky anyway, instead of on our adorable daughters. It is, after all, the placentas that are throwing my hormones all out of whack!) thought it had been too long (what, a few weeks?) since I had experienced a day of repeated violent vomiting spells. And people wonder why I have only gained 10 pounds! :-P

(Aren't you so glad you have been such dedicated readers, and have asked for more frequent updates? ;))

On "Belly Shots"...

So I have made it clear to some of you reading ;) that I think the traditional "belly shots" are, um, really stupid. I'm sorry! I just think they are pointless, and if the person who is being photographed doesn't really want to be, it gets rather old having a camera snapping off at you every second! That being said, I can forgive. For now :) {Especially since it isn't NEAR as odd as people stopping in the room I was working in at church today "just to look at me". I swear, you'd think I was a circus freak, or - at the very least - the first person on the entire planet to be pregnant.}

Also, it means I can try very hard to take advantage of normal situations in which photos might be taken, force people like my reluctant husband to have said pictures taken, and post them before my mother can post a hundred pictures she took of me in the course of 10 minutes, despite knowing that she would kill someone if she were the victim of such schemes! (Don't try and tell me I'm wrong, mom!)

So, I bring you a few Easter photos. Reluctantly, I might add, since I took SUCH pride in an adorable dress that showed off a normal looking, cute, compact pregnant belly in real life.... But at the mercy of the wind and a camera, it came much closer to pulling off "tent" than it did "dress". What a disappointment! I swear, it was actually super cute!

* A word about Cassi's outfit:

She and I assumed these ridiculous pants were pajama pants. We were told they are "just spring capris", and - on further inspection - it appears they WERE made for a more public purpose than pajamas. Weird...

The closest "Belly Shot" you'll ever get, mostly because Cassi and I love the "pocket" on the hooded sweatshirt, which loses it's purpose when filled with uterus. :)

Hello, Viability!

Today marks the girls' 24th week of gestation. Babies born after 24 weeks have a greater than 90% chance of survival outside the womb, most of whom have no chronic complications. That blows my mind!

Still, we have of course made it EXPLICITLY clear to both of them that they do not, by any means, have an open invitation to enter the world for a while still! ;)

Yes, they have a lot of growing to do. No, there are never any guarantees in life and their lives and ours still lie completely in God's hands. They will come according to His plan and will be exactly as He created them to be, regardless of when that time may be.

But wow, what a huge milestone, especially for anyone who was ever told that it might be nearly impossible to have even one biological child. (We were processing those words only 8 months ago....).

To know that, from this point forward, there is a plan ... a protocol... an evidence-based method of care... to keep the babies in as long as possible, but to provide for them if they make their appearance early. To know that, from this point forward, the entire world would give them much more than a fighting chance. To know that this point often marks the difference in bringing your children home (eventually), and "praying for a miracle" because there isn't a lot they can do if preterm labor starts between 20 and 24 weeks -- except hope and pray that you can lie there and keep them in. (It's too late for some interventions, and too early for most others).

We still, along with the medical team providing for mine and the babies' care, want them to grow much bigger and stronger, and want their lungs to develop a lot more before they take their first real breaths. But now the goals are so much more optimistic... 28 weeks, 30 weeks, then 34 weeks, etc. And with each passing week -- no, truthfully with each passing day going forward - they will be more and more prepared (physically) to take on the world. And we, who have only been able to thank God for getting us this far and pray for peace as His plan unfolds ...... can start breathing easier with each new day, and can start getting more excited to hopefully meet our beautiful daughters in due time.

(Now that I'm all choked up, we're off to Ikea! ;))

Happy Vacation to me (and the girls)!

Kyle has been on vacation since Sunday.... now I'm off, too! We don't have very much planned except for cleaning and projects around the house, but it beats working! It also means that several hours a day we'll just be able to veg and rest. And, some days, not change out of our pajamas!

It absolutely doesn't feel like vacation yet (and won't, I imagine, until at least Monday)-- but my "out of office" reply and my calendar say it is. I'm going to go with it! :)

Another Level II today! (23w4d)

Hi! I'm exhausted, but thought I'd pop on and post an update from our Level II ultrasound today. We were there just about an hour again, and everything looks great! We saw 4 heart chambers in both babies, all measurements were appropriate, etc. Even my fluid levels were apparently more normal, which is great!

The best news from the scan, though, was the girls' weights! Appropriate/expected weight for gestation (23-24 weeks) is between 1.25 pounds and 1.5 pounds. Baby A was approximated at 1lb, 6oz (1.4lb) and Baby B was just behind (they are thrilled at how closely they are growing!) at 1lb, 5 oz (1.3lb). Despite having gained fewer than 10 pounds, they are obviously growing just fine! No Boost or Ensure for Jennifer! ;) Edit: Kyle saw in the report that they are right around the 45th percentile for all of the length, etc measurements! That's a bit easier to "get", at least for me :)

They must have been a bit sleepy (or very likely just cramped!) because they were behaving much better (ie not punching or kicking one another). They certainly move nonstop and have changed positions again (Baby A completely rolling away in the middle of the scan!), but didn't show off as much today. We did get what Kyle and I swear was a big, open-mouthed smile from Baby B... but of course the pictures we got from their mediocre machines ended up looking just as creepy as all other face-forward, skeletal shots. I'll post them anyway... Just take our word for it, it was adorable! ;)

First the stupid face pictures. I hate these, we totally need to schedule our 3D scan to see their cute little cheeks, instead of just eye sockets!

Now the stuff that's a bit cuter.... although still poor quality. I swear, it's a good thing insurance covers these scans. We found out they charge our insurance company $600 (I'm sure mostly because a perinatologist is present, instead of just a songrapher, but still...). You'd think for that kind of money every few weeks, we'd have works of art! ;) Still, we're pretty enamored with these babies....

3 new posts?!

Ok, two quasi-substantial ones, plus this one. Sorry it's taken me so long to update, it's been a crazy week! I did want to let you know that I posted a few more today (since, depending on how you are viewing this blog, it may or may not indicate "new" posts). Also, the babies' book list and Upcoming Events have been updated.

I plan to take pictures of the nursery soon (or bum the ones that my mom took if she ever uploads them), to show it off a bit. It's coming along nicely! Slowly but surely, each room in our house is being taken over a bit by baby stuff. If only we had some babies to add to the mess! :)

Hasta pronto!

- There is little to no evience to suppor the popular notion that twins "skip" a generation.
- The moder world record for giving birth to multiples is held by Leontina Albina from Chile, whose 55 children included three sets of triplets. The all-time historical record is claimed by a Russian who is purported to have given birth to 6 pairs of twins, 6 sets of triplets and 4 sets of quads.
- The scientific study of twins is knwon as "gemmellology".
- 20-22% of twins are left-handed, compared with less than 10% of singletons.

Week 22.5 Appointment

I had an appointment this past Tuesday, and all is well as far as we know. It's not like they really do anything to determine that!

Total weight gain = 9.5 pounds. I thought for sure I'd get yelled at, but they are finally being more reasonable! :) Since we know the girls are growing (apparently on track), it would not really be necessary for me to "make up" for what I'm missing at this point. Now, the only instructions/goals are to continue to gain steadily, and the babies will, too. They want about a pound per week for now, and eventually about 1.5-2 pounds per week. I accomplished that this past month, so we'll see!

The anemia continues, but luckily the additional iron is bringing me to a safer, more normal result. Someone noticed a bit of pink in my face the other day (for the first time in months), and I don't get as lightheaded. Maybe eventually, I'll also get some energy from the appropriate amount of red blood cells and oxygen! ;)

Heartbeats sounded nice and strong (which we know, since we still have a doppler here for a little while longer). I'm "only" measuring 30ish weeks, which is exciting to me since, at the last appointment, I was measuring about 10 weeks ahead! I was thrilled to see things have slowed down a bit.

Additional calcium has been ordered, which means I'm popping pills every few hours since half of the stuff I'm taking can't be taken within a few hours of one another. It feels strange to be filling a med tray of crap I have to take when I'm pregnant and not supposed to be taking much of anything, but it's all safe and necessary at least! Whatever it takes...

I think that about wraps up the entire appointment. FMLA paperwork has been signed and faxed, although I'm not disclosing my last day of work here until I at least tell the coworkers :) Then again, it's not like I really KNOW my last day. I just know my last possible day, according to Kyle and I, assuming I make it that far. It still feels like forever away.....

Sorry there isn't anything more exciting to report from the appointment. Prenatal care is a joke right about this time of a pregnancy, and just think -- now I get to go every 2 weeks! We do have another Level II ultrasound scheduled for Tuesday though, which is always at least a little more fun. Maybe I'll actually have some pictures to share this time! Doubtful though, since the perinatologist keeps wanting to focus on the medical stuff. Sheesh! ;)

Off to "enjoy" the ridiculously dreadful weather...

I have a few more things I'd like to post, if I can get around to them today! Until then, take care!

So do I have to change the colors back from "Spring"?

Seriously, these pictures are so out of place on this page! My best intentions to bring on Spring have clearly failed! :(

Nevertheless..... Here is our blizzard. (Blech).

Some pictures from my parents neighborhood, some taken during moderate snow fall (not the heaviest we saw in the last 36 hours).

Cassi out in the snow:

Mrs. Hutch's Roof!

Backyard and Mailbox at the Lawless'

And about 13 miles west....

Out our front door last night:

Strange effect with the house blocking the blowing snow.... about 10 feet out, we had virtually nothing! The rest of the backyard measured in with about 17-18 inches

The lot next door is a full-size basement. I'm thinking they won't be working there much this week, since it appears to be almost half-full of snow!

The last few pictures are of the front yard. These measurements are much more accurate, because there is less of the strange wind effects.... our neighborhood is extremely flat, and mostly unobstructed! Our front porch, for a reference, is about 3 feet high. The snow totals in the front yard (and therefore probably most of the area, legitimately) were between 18 and 22 inches! Gotta love being up north! ;)

Actually, sarcasm aside, I'm thrilled we're farther north. The Ohio River is being reported at about 50 feet currently (just at flood stage). The temperatures are (thankfully?) going to rise slower than they thought this week. Originally, we were supposed to be near 60 in 48 hours. Now, we are expecting a bit more snow tomorrow (hooray) and temperatures climbing steadily into the 50's by Friday. Still, there is much anticipation about where the water could possibly go. Governor Strickland even has the National Guard on call, in case "conditions deteriorate rapidly".

Our snow will melt, and leave us a nice little pond in the backyard for a few days, but hopefully we will otherwise fare ok!

Now, if only my ski clothes fit around my big belly.... I'd so be out playing! :)

I'm off to enjoy being snowed in. We've had obligations that have taken us out of the house and into this mess (including through Levels 2 and 3 emergencies) all weekend.... we have junk food and movies, a bit of laundry to do, and are both off work -- I can't think of a better Sunday! (And I seriously can't wait until vacation!)
